The Bittersweets Series - by Herself

All Wrong
Romance; Angst; post-Wrecked
"She can't go on, she'll go on." Just a short piece from Spike's point of view, with a sex scene set in Buffy's room that I wish we could have seen on the show.

Who Am I?
Angst; alt-S6; series
It's tell-the-Scoobies time, and to say they don't take it well would be an understatement. This is a terrific, uncompromising look at all the characters, with a last line that made me cry. Bleak stuff.

Forgive Me
Angst; alt-S6; series
I've figured out why I like the Bittersweets series so much. The sex scenes actually serve a purpose to the story, rather than being shoved in there (no pun intended) as a sort of porn interlude till the plot starts up again. This installment is excellent, drawing parallels between Spike's past as William (he shoots Buffy down when she tries to insist that he isn't William at all) and Buffy's feeling that she isn't the same girl as before she died. I loved the glimpses at Spike's past given by the box of memories. Spike in general is wonderful in this series, endlessly complex and not evil or completely good, but entirely in love with Buffy and ready to forgive her any amount of pain. Warnings for rape, and some mention of slash.

What's It to Be?
Angst; Alt-S6; series
Blurb not done yet, but Spike and Buffy visit the Hyperion. Buffy finds out about Connor. Angel finds out about Spike. Drama! Read it.

Spike, or the Ambiguities
Angst; series
Blurb pending while I reread it, but it kicks ass.

Mr. Grieves and the Fallen Woman
Angst; series
I see this as my karmic payback for all the crappy fanfic around where Buffy travels back in time and falls for William. This novel-length story has Buffy lost in 1880 London - standard fare for this type of tale, but it's actually good. A big part of that is that the author knows the time period (indicating she's done the research Doug couldn't be arsed to do for Fool for Love - off the top of my head I can think of half a dozen errors in the party scene alone. Can I mention how much I love Herself for retconning at least one of those mistakes with a throwaway line in What's It To Be about William's outfit?). This deals with the harsh realities of life in that time - with no family Buffy is forced onto the streets - and adds the twist that William isn't a "nice" version of Spike. Far from it.

The Littler Bit
Angst; Romance
This is my favourite take on the "pregnant Buffy" fic genre. A trip to the past has left Buffy carrying William's child, but she and Spike agonize over whether to keep the baby. Sounds soap-opera-y? It really, really isn’t. Made me cry like a big idiot.

All Merry and Bright
Romance
Sequel to The Littler Bit and the finale of the Bittersweets series, this is a sweet look at Spike as an insanely proud father. Buffy and Dawn get some good parts, and the poker game is wonderful.

Forsake Me Not

Buffy/Spike, Spike/Xander
Angst; Romance; AU Futurefic
After an accident leaves her bitter and closed off from Spike and their daughter, Buffy gets to live her life differently. I love AUs, especially this kind where we get to see what might have been. I especially like the reality where Spike's with Xander, and Buffy's reaction to the same.
