ice cream for freaks: buffy and angel fanfic recs

Buffy Ensemble

American Pie
by FLuFFy
Parody; S6

I no longer hate season 6 with the passion I once did, but I still find some mocking enjoyable, especially when it's as good as this. I loved the "previously" recap and the "crossover alert" had me in stitches.

Answering Machine Blues
by Robyn the Snowshoe Hare
Humour; S4; Crossover with AtS

Very funny short piece chronicling the events of the episode Something Blue through messages on Cordy's machine.

Coming Through the Keyholes
by hold_that_thought
Action/Adventure; Humour; S3
Andrew, Buffy ensemble

Fleshing out the story of the Andrew-induced flying monkey mayhem at the school play, this could have been an episode of season three. I love Andrew assuming that Xander is the leader of the Scoobies.

Disneyland
by Christina Kamnikar
Character Study; Angst; post-Chosen
After Sunnydale, everyone deals with what they've lost. Multi-chaptered, so a lot of characters get their feelings explored. This made me cry. Copiously. In the middle of a crowded train station. Last time I read any of this author's work on my palm pilot...

Legend
by Marcus L Rowland
Humour; Futurefic
Ooh, this is interesting - a fic told through snippets of articles and scripts related to the smash-hit TV show "Billie the Monster Slayer", based on the books by Dawn Summers. It's fun and interesting for all, but English scholars/geeks will probably get a kick out of the gradual distortion of the original source material.

Les Noyades
by Elena
Angst; Drama; post Gift

Warning: character death. In the wake of Buffy's death, the gang slowly falls apart. Spike's point of view as he finds himself in the unexpected role of protector. Gorgeous and painful. Slashy (Spike/Xander) but the subtext doesn't really become text. Can be read as part of the series or as a standalone.

Magically Delicious
by balticwoman
Ensemble; self-insertion OFC
Humour; Parody; S6
A Yale student gets sucked into the Buffyverse, where everyone seems convinced she's Buffy's little sister... funny stuff. The dialogue had me rolling. Unfinished.

A Raising In the Sun
by Barb Cummings
Adventure; post-Gift
Novel, focused mostly around Spike and Dawn. Willow finds a way to bring Buffy back, but it's going to require the sacrifice of a soul... (Note that this is redemptionista and pre-Spuffy)

Repeatedly, in Many Different Positions
by The Magnificent Eight
Humour/Parody; S6

I want to marry all eight of these fine authors, but since I don't actually live in Utah that could be somewhat awkward. This pisstake of last season sees a new demon dispatch the Scoobies on a scavenger hunt to find things they badly need. These would include "heterosexuality", "natural hair colour", "gym membership" and "balls". I loved Buffy spending all her time dragging Spike off for sex or obsessing about the Emmys.

Small Fry
by Mad Poetess and James Walkswithwind
Humour
Anya/Spike/Xander, Wes/Gunn, Willow/Tara
Officially my Favourite Buffyverse Fic Ever. It's been done before - a spell transforms the characters into four-year-olds - but this is the best one out there by miles. Very, very funny as Spike and Xander run riot, Buffy is a little princess and l'il Giles just despairs at the immaturity of the other three, while Willow and Tara go gooey over the sweetness of it all. This is too adorable. Slash warning because Spike, Xander and Anya are a "couple" in this. Oh, and so are Wes and Gunn. Somehow the authors manage to avoid any squickiness, even though Spike is still sex-mad in his new, shorter state. His first reaction to (grown-up) Angel (rocketing towards him shrieking "DADDY!") had me on the floor.

Son of Small Fry
by James Walkswithwind and Mad Poetess
Humour
Anya/Spike/Xander, Wes/Gunn, Willow/Tara, Angel/Lorne
The sequel to Small Fry, this is just as much fun as the first - this time round it's Willow, Tara, Giles and Wesley who get turned into four-year-olds. There's an angsty, romantic scene with Spike and his two lovers that made me sniffly. And Ethan's in it! Ethan's always great. The characters all got to shine. Four-year-old Tara was so cute she made me melt in a big puddle of goo. If you never read any other slash, ever, please read these two stories.

The Three Lions Series
by Lesley
Humour; Angst; Drama; Action

Warning: character death. Starts off as fluff about Spike and Giles watching the World Cup but with the arrival of Wesley and Willow the angst starts to mount up. The later parts of the series are excellent - the characters' voices are spot on.

Throwback
by Gidgetgirl
Faith-centred, ensemble
Humour; Fluff; Angst; AU season 1 Angel/season 4 Buffy
Angel and Faith are accidentally transformed into four-year-olds with no memories of their adult lives. I have something of a kink for these types of fics and this made me giggle for ages. Has two standalone installments, Seek and Destroy on Halloween and The Bad Word Game.

Turning Point
by Girl With Journal
AU; Drama

Another one that treats the Tabula Rasa universe as the real history of the characters, this is the story of how Randy Giles became a vampire with a soul (turned by Drusilla, of course). I love this premise and although this is short, it's very well written and has a nice friendship between Randy and Alex, as well as some good angst from Rupert over what's happened to his son.

With an Alien People Clutching Their Gods
by Mikelesq
Character Study; Action; post-Gift
I love stories like this that fit right into canon to give us a look at what Joss and co didn't have time to do episodes about. This is the summer after Buffy's death, and Glory's minion, Jinx, decides that the Buffybot is his new goddess. His conversations with the various Scoobies shed a lot of light on some things that happened later, and Jinx himself is funny as a tub of monkeys.
