Set in the long summer that Buffy was missing in LA, this is the best Joyce story I've come across. This is a fantastic, poignant look at Buffy's mother as she tries to deal with what she now knows about her daughter's life. It takes a deeper look at why she never saw what was going on in Buffy's world; this is exactly the kind of thing that could have happened between seasons 2 and 3. I think maybe it did.

Shortly before her death, Joyce sings at Caritas. This is a very nicely done piece about a criminally underused character. It manages to be somewhat hopeful, despite the feeling of terrible inevitability.
